Kelly and Ryan: The Epitome of Modern Day Romance

For those who are not familiar with the Office and specifically the characters Kelly and Ryan, let me give some backstory. I'll start with Kelly Kapoor and why the addition of this character is crucial to the show, playing the comedic relief in almost every scene she is in.

Kelly's interests can be described as boys, dating, gossiping, and anything to do with celebrities. She also loves Beyonce, the color pink, the singer Pink, snow cones, hot dogs, and most importantly, "basically, anything that is awesome." She's hilarious because she is pretty witty and has a lot of great scenes where she roasts and claps back at some of her other colleagues.

Moving on to Ryan, he couldn't be any more interesting. Ryan's interests can be summed up in one word: partying. He is especially vulnerable to vices, reminiscing back to his college days and every weekend is a lost weekend according to him. He spends his money on coke (not the drink) and expensive haircuts and his favorite inspirational quote is “work hard, play hard.”

Now that you have a better understanding of these one-of-a-kind characters you can better understand how absolutely different they are from each other and how their relationship in itself is hilarious. They have an extremely toxic relationship, which is a serious matter, but the writers make light of the situation by using bathos.

The scene that makes me cackle from "thoughtful laughter" is when Ryan is jealous Kelly has a new "amazing boyfriend" and he is losing his mind that she is with someone else. The reason why this scene was so hilarious for me was because he dresses up, comes in on a horse in front of work, and says "I know that I haven't always treated you the way that you, for whatever reason, feel you deserve to be treated." I literally could not believe any part of the scene was real and I laughed so hard at the entire episode.

Ryan says, "I know that I haven't always treated you the way that you, for whatever reason, feel you deserve to be treated"
